Jungle Destruction

Being in Costa Rica is like being inside a nature show. Life abounds in all forms, shapes and sizes. Mother Earth is alive! Unlike Hawaii where the land is young and Nature is relatively safe, Costa Rica’s abundance of life forms forced a healthy competition among species and a natural balance. Enter us, humans, and add another dimension of death and destruction. While it’s natural for any living being to affect their environment, we, humans, have taken that effect to an extreme. So much so that we’re endangering our own specie’s existence.
In 4 short years, I’ve seen a tiny village with dirt roads, jungle, Nature sounds, small community and lots of wild life turning rapidly into a town. Construction everywhere. Bulldozers, cranes and hard hat crews leveling down jungles into flat lots. Engine noises. Signs announcing “For Sale”, “Fumigation”, “Building Contractors”…etc. Some might see this as “progress”, “economic growth”, “affluence”…etc. In essence, “we’re paving paradise to put up parking lots”*! I’ve seen this construction frenzy happen all over the world.
By killing a tree, we’re destroying the home of hundreds of animals, plants and insects. We’re shrinking their resources. They become more competitive and aggressive. They attack back. We kill more of them. Nature becomes the enemy. We kill more trees, animals, plants and insects. Build concrete boxes in which to hide. What used to be a jungle full of life, is now asphalt, concrete, cement and plastic full of stressed humans and a few other enslaved life forms. We run away to another part that still has some nature left seeking sanity, relaxation, healing and peace. It becomes popular. We destroy it. Run to the next spot…and so the story goes. Humans are the cancer of Mother Earth, cities are the tumors. Can we stop before it’s too late?

“When the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten and the last stream poisoned, you will realize that you cannot eat money.” Alanis Obomsawin
