Costa Rica 2015

Today’s excitement: took the bus from Puerto Viejo to Limon to catch the water taxi to Tortuguerro National Park. 15 km before we get to Limon, I heard and felt a jolting thud. We got rear ended. I was hoping the driver would just keep going but there was white smoke coming from the back so we all got out. A bus hit a truck which, in turn hit our bus. The front of the first bus was badly damaged and it swerved blocking the 2 lane road. The truck had its nose lodged in the back of our bus and fluids were running down the street. Only the truck driver was injured. Everyone else was fine but the road was completely blocked in both directions. I saw the truck driver standing near his vehicle with a bloody shirt. Next thing I know, my German co-travelers were giving him first aid and they asked me for antiseptic which I readily had (see Shawn, packing a first aid kit can be useful. I’m just glad I wasn’t the one who needed it). They bandaged his head and he was on his feet talking and drinking water. We, my German co-travelers and I, eventually called a taxi from Limon to come get us and it took us to the ferry which waited for us. Tortuguerro is a nature wonderland. Took tons of pictures with my big camera including the red-eyed frog. I will upload them eventually. This is me sipping my coconut at sunset.

Addendum: I talked with some friends who left Puerto Viejo after us and they were stuck in the traffic mess created by our accident for 3 hours. In hind sight, we were the lucky ones!
