The minute I set foot there, my whole body relaxed. As if in the warm loving embrace of a beloved. A woman lying half naked on the swing. A couple of people in hammocks. Cat cleaning itself in the sun. After quick introductions, I walked all over; touching the trees, greeting the mountains, taking it all in. Every corner has beautiful memories etched in my heart. The first timers must have thought I was crazy as I touched things and talked about how they used to be or how they are still the same. A long awaited encounter after Covid kept us apart for way too long. Let me back up a day…
My flight landed in Spain after 1 am. I was worried everything would be closed and deserted. This is Europe after all. To my utter delight, the airport, transportation and the city were in full vibrant swing with life. I’m naturally a night owl and it’s hard to find European places on my schedule. I can hear my heart sing! Spain; the culture that celebrates life with total abandon and worships the arts, in all forms. This is my heart’s home! Andalucía especially is a beautiful blend of east and west. My final destination: El Valle de Sensaciones and Resonancia Community, which are nestled in Alpujarra mountainous region of Andalucía, Spain.
This magical Valle, where I used to spend most of the summer until 2020, calms my nervous system in a very unique way. May be it’s the beautiful Nature, the sounds, smells and sights of the birds, insects, trees and mountains. The buildings; kitchen, showers, hot tub, tree houses are built with no corners, straight lines or sharp angles. Only curves, circles and smooth edges. There is something very grounding and primally appealing about mimicking Nature that way. Nature has no straight lines and neither does the Valle. Human made structures blend in beautifully with the natural surroundings.
Moonlight casting a faint light into the clay house. The shadows of the surrounding mountains look like giants lovingly holding hands encircling the valley. I’m lying in bed reflecting on the day. Started with collecting fresh fruit from the trees; blackberries, figs and grapes. Dancing naked under the trees, cats lazing around, one person making pancakes, another working in the garden. Cooling off in the pool. Delicious lunch under the trees with friends. Lying in hammocks chatting and exchanging life stories. One person oiling another’s hair. I’m stroking the cats and feeling great joy through their pleasure. Another day in the Valle immersed in Nature, community and love.
I don’t take such freedom and abundance for granted. I’m very aware of how many loved ones are not free and experiencing a lot of pain. I send them prayers and visions of peace, freedom, comfort and solace. Love is resistance. I want to write. I want to share my heart and record all the wonderful experiences. But my heart is heavy. I feel a huge amount of sadness and anger because a very brutal inhumane racist occupation is committing a full out genocide on my people and the Western colonial imperialist powers are supporting and financing the massacres. I run to Nature. She has the magic of healing and recharging my soul.
I envision a world where we’re all free, surrounded by our loved ones, laughing and celebrating life, love and community. I also envision the oppressors surrounded by so much love that heals their hearts from fear, anger, greed and aggression. I see, in my mind’s eye, Mother Nature sucking all that fear and suffering into her belly to be composted. Hungry underground creatures receive the compost and transform it into new growth and new life. A new reality is born out of the ashes. What this new reality looks like is up to us; you, me, each and every one of us.
I seed Love and Abundance. Oppressive systems thrive on divide and conquer, victimhood and mindless consumption. Oppression ends when we heal our relationships; with ourselves, with other humans, all creatures and with Mother Earth. We need to build alternative realities. Unlearn the stories of oppression and write new stories of love, cooperation, coexistence and abundance. When enough of us hold this new frequency it becomes more accessible to others.
