New Religion!

“How can they tolerate that thing on their face?”, my non-Muslim friends would ask about Muslim women who wear the niqab (face cover). “I would suffocate!” they would say.
“They believe they’re doing the right thing”, I would answer. “In their beliefs, God wants them to do that”.
“Why?” My friends would ask.
“They believe that they have to protect men from naughty thoughts. If they don’t, they are evil and will be punished”.
“Why are they responsible for protecting men?” the question begs itself.
“Because their God says so!”

Fast forward to 2020:
“How can they tolerate those masks on their face?”
“They believe they’re doing the right thing. In their beliefs, the CDC* wants them to do that”.
“Why?”
“They believe that they have to protect others from naughty germs. If they don’t, they are evil and will be punished”.
“Why are they responsible for protecting others?” the question begs itself.
“Because the CDC says so!”

“Danger! Danger! Evil is coming to get you! But we know how to protect you. If you just follow the rules, you’ll be saved. Save yourself and your loved ones! Help save all human beings! Spread the gospel. Indoctrinate the children. Convert others. The infidels need to be shown the right path or punished if they don’t obey…”

Many faiths, yet fear is the same. Does it make sense? Is it brainwashing? Is it our duty? Is it crazy?
Depends on your beliefs.

  1. Nothing to add. It’s perfect.
I run into a version of this when I try to explain to people that I don’t believe in the Religion of Global Warming, but am very much concerned about how our planet is changing, both on its own and affected by what we do. Of course, even Science is a belief system. Our brains are wired to using belief systems as shortcuts and safety nets. I think one aspect of enlightenment may be to recognize, acknowledge, and examine that.
